I noticed water under the side / side that is located in the garage. I transferred frozen items to the main freezer and turned off unit and opened the doors to thaw out unit if it had ice on the coils. That did not help so this morning I opened the back up and inside also to expose compressor and both fans. The compressor is not running and neither are the fans. From info on this site I took off the start relay and shook it, no rattles so assume it is probably okay. Next I removed the overload switch and checked for continuity and it checked out as having continuity on the X1 scale of my multimeter. I then checked the start capacitor with my analog multimeter and it deflected to a low ohm value then gradually rose to a higher value of resistance. This is where I am currently at and need some help to proceed further.

Here are your parts, includes a wiring diagram. Replacement parts for MAYTAG MSD2556AEW REF - SXS/I&W | AppliancePartsPros.comI am assuming that the interior light works and therefore it is getting power. I doubt it is a compressor problem. The fans and the compressor are wired in parallel so if none of them work they are not receiving power. Plug it in and move the thermostat back and forth to see if it will fire up. If it does I would replace the thermostat. If it does not start. Unplug the unit and short the two wires to the thermostat together. If you have to tape them up so they do not short to anything else. Then plug it in and give it a try. If it fires up replace the thermostat. If it does not fire up then odds are you are stuck in a defrost cycle. The most likely culprit is the Adaptive Defrost Board. I would also check the defrost thermostat. Should be 0 ohms when frozen and 240,000 approx. at room temperature. If it is deformed/bulged replace it even if it measures OK. |

Thanks Denman for your response.
I failed to tell you that the light is indeed working.
I plugged unit in and moved the temperature control for both fridge and freezer from off to max cold several times, unit did not start.
Could you tell me the item number for the thermostat and what section it is in in the exploded parts view, as I have not found it yet. The temperature control assy. has no wires to it and it looks like it controls the damper to the freezer. I have not found the two wires to short together.
I checked the defrost thermostat and it is indeed 240 Kohms at room temperature. There were no apparent bulges or deformations.

Denman,
I located the thermostat by taking the entire control assembly out of the top of the refrigerator. I unplugged the red & blue wires to the thermostat and jumpered them. Reconnected wiring plugs to assy.
Plugged in unit, nothing operated except the lights.
Is it your opinion that the adaptive defrost circuit is defective?

Yes that would now be at the top of my list.
The thermostat provides the power side while the defrost board supplies the Neutral side to run the compressor and fans. |

Well Denman, I received the adaptive defrost control board today. I installed it and the refrigerator / freezer is running very well. Thanks for the troubleshooting assistance, made the job very easy and really impressed my wife and friends.
