We have an ancient Maytag Dryer. While the easiest suggestion to this request for help is going to be "ditch it," forget it. I've pitched that solution way too many times and I keep getting shot down.

So here is the problem: The drum on this baby stops turning and I (NotMrFIxIt), say "Let's get a new one" while my wife says "No, it must be a broken belt. Let's open the back and see." So of course, she's right.

I order a replacement belt from Sears (model No. 3-11012) and a week later it shows up in the mail. I spend a good part of Saturday trying to put the thing on without breaking my fingers (the instructions I used can be found at http://www.applianceaid.com/images/mayosbelts.JPG). After coming up with some really inventive new combinations of swear words, I think I've had some success. Except that when I turn the thing on, it makes an awful racket. I'm willing to live with the sound, but my wife says no. The sound means something's wrong. Hard to argue with that one.

So another hour or so later -- more swearing -- I've now followed the directions with a little more precision, and I'm rewarded with the sweet success of silence from the machine and applauds from my family. I'm feeling pretty good, so I take the rest of the day off.

Next day, I put up a load of laundry and twenty minutes later throw it into the dryer. No awful sound from the dryer, but it does start to smoke. We're a non-smoking family, especially when it comes to our appliances. Again, no denying it (though I try), this is not right. Of course, being a master of denial, I convince myself that the smoke was a fluke, so I try it again . . . and again. By the third time, I take the damn belt off and call Sears. Sears, it turns out, is no help. So, here I am. . . .

Now a bit more info for you dryer sleuths: before I yanked the belt, I noticed (OK, my wife noticed) that the drum wasn't really turning all that well. We (uh, she) also mentioned that it smelled like perhaps the motor was burning out because -- something about the belt not fitting right, and thus making the motor strain. (Frankly, I was all in favor of letting the damn thing burn out so I could chuck the machine, but I was again voted down.) I did notice that the drum belt was significantly tighter than the other belt back there (the 3-1103 reduction belt), and as I said it was extremely difficult to get the new belt onto the pulleys in the first place.

So, any thoughts on how to make the existing belt work on this ancient machine without causing a fire that burns down my house? Is there a larger belt I could buy (although neither Sears nor any other supplier could think of one)? Is the drum belt supposed to so taut? I am certain that the old -- now broken -- belt never had such problems; seems reasonable that the new belt should be just as easy going.

Thanks for your help. Sorry for the long, long message.

Dont know if I can help you or not but the Reduction Pully as you noticed slides up and down in a grove it should move freely you can get some grease to get it good and slimy also check the drum and blower bearings it is possible they are shot you can check the drum bearings by just turning drum with out belts on (should have free movement with little resistance) to check the blower bearings have the blower belt off and grab the belt and see saw it back and forth across the top of the pully to see if it is siezed up you can remove the housing going around it to gain access to blower wheel It is possible the belt broke cuz the bearings are shot hope this helps .........Oh Love the humor by the way I spit coffee all over my keyboard from laughing so hard lol

Thanks. I'll see if these suggestions help. Is there some sort of special grease I need to use?
