Hello everyone. I'm a newbie to this site so I am hoping to get some good advice. I have a Maytag fridge that had the relay overload burn up last night. I took it out and the wires and the clips are all fried. I am going to the appliance store tomorrow to pick up a new one but I have some ?'s in the mean time. 1: What would have caused the relay to burn up like that 2: If I wasn't home to unplug the fridge could it have caused a fire 3: Is this a common problem on a frige that is 6 yrs old 4:Is there any info I need before I replace the old relay? I know there alot of questions but all my food is in coolers right now and I would like to get this done asap. Plus it would make me look good in front of the wifey( you know, getting things done in a timely fashion and all that jazz) Well I look forward to any and all advice and I' sure I'll be posting some more questions on this site because the washer sounds funny right about now. Thanks to all. Sorry guys I gave the wrong model # on the frige . The right # is mzd2768gew not mdz. Thanks again

From your questions the very first question is the most important. There should be an excessive current drawn by the compressor to cause such heavy damage to the relay. There is 50/50 chance that the compressor has gone bad. On the other side, such relays are known to be poorly designed and the manufacturer had completelly redesign them.

Fix the wires and replace the relay. If the compressor will start then it will probably last a few more...days, months or years? Nobody knows.

If you need the correct part number for the relay assembly, post the serial number of the refrigerator.

Here are the break down diagrams for the Maytag refrigerator Model MZD2768GEW

Thanks Gene for the help. Ibhad ordered the part online last night and I got the original Maytag part number and it seems to be replaced by another part. They totally redesigned the part. Anyway the serial number from the fridge is 11294477zw . The part number that I ordered was 12002784. I hope it is the correct one. By the way Gene, do they sell replacement wires for the unit or do I need to cut them back and put new clips on ? Thanks again Gene I appreciate the help.

The part number 12002784 is the correct one.

I do not think there are a replacement wires sold by the model number. Just cut off a damaged piece and put a new terminal.

Good luck.

Thanks again Gene. I think I got working. The freezer is getting cold but it is taking a while for the fridge part to cool down. One more question about the compressor, it is hot when I touch it , is that normal?

The compressor should be hot on touch. Also be advised that it takes about 24 hours to cool down to proper temperature. I'm glad you were able to fix it.
