Oven and broiler isn't lighting. I measured resistance on both glowbars and got 58 ohms on the oven glowbar and zero on the broiler glowbar. Are these hooked up in a series and would bad broiler glowbar prevent oven glowbar from glowing?

I do hear a click after about 10 to 15 seconds coming from the control panel on top.

There is no smell of gas. cooktops work fine.

Thanks, Jon

i have exactly the same problem. both the oven & broiler are non-functional. no clicking when either is turned on, no gas odor, & neither glow bars light. i replaced the glow bar to the oven.... no luck.

alwaysclr,

I was guessing mine was the oven too. I checked the resistance on both and it turned out it was the broiler glow bar. If one is bad neither light. Check the resistance on both. If you are not familiar, the boys at Radio Shack can help you or you can try your local appliance part dealer. If the broiler glow bar is good, it may be the controler. If you are in the Baltimore/Washington DC area, the guys at any Tribles are great. Good luck!

hi, thanks for the quick update... what's the best way to remove the broiler glowbar for testing... from the oven or to remove the top. i will be very happy if that's the problem.... a relatively inexpensive fix!

You have to go in from the oven. For the broiler, just take out the drawer. Then unscrew and take out the drip pan (floor) of the oven so you have access. You can then follow the leads and unplug them from the terminal so you can test the glow bar. If bad, There are nut screws holding them in and it takes a small box end wrench with the usual slight bent end to get to them, if you don't have a special tool. If it is the gas controller, I can't remember how to test that, but just search this forum for "GE XL44 oven" and I'm sure it will turn up. I remember reading a post about that. Replacing the broiler glow bar fixed mine. Good luck.

i think your xl44 is a little different than mine. i replaced the "oven" glowbar by removing the drawer, floor etc.... that part is done. my "broiler" glowbar is at the back top of the oven. i lifted up the top and found that's not the way to go. it appears you just have to curl yourself into the oven and get to it from the inside. the 2 screws are easily seen.... not so as i remember the oven glowbar. so if i can either get in there or hire a contortionist, i might succeed! thanks again!

You're right. I had my terminology backwards. Oven on bottom, broiler on top. Remember the oven door slides up off its hinges. It really helps to have that out of the way so you can get up close and personal. Just open the door to the first stop and then pull straight up at the angle the door is at (straight away from the hinge). Fold the hinge bars back closed to keep them from scaring the hell out of you when you bump them and they snap closed.
