The timer (start switch only) went out on my 23 series maytag 8400 dryer. I called APP and got a replacement on the way. It didn't look right, but fit so I installed it. The timer did not work on any cycle, and made an audible pop when tested on the sensor cycle. I quickly removed and called APP back to find out that they had sold me the wrong timer for my series. The correct one came and I tested to similar results. The dryer starts in the correct timer positions, but the dial never moves. Essentially it will run until shut off manually. Very unhandy. Any suggestions?

Here are your parts includes a wiring diagram.

Have you tried both timed dry and auto modes to see if the timer advances?

If the timer advances in timed dry then it could be that the moisture sensor (Item 6 in Section 8) is dirty and needs cleaning.

If it does not advance in either mode then the moisture control board (Item 13 in Section 2) may be shot as power for the timer motor goes through this board in both modes.
