Our old (70's?) Kenmore Country Living oven is misbehaving in intriguing ways.

This is a pilot-lit oven, and both top and bottom burners have their pilots lit.

When the oven is turned on, the red light comes on indicating that it knows it needs to light the burners, but the burners don't ignite.

When I turn it to 'broil,' the top burner comes on.

From this I infer that:
• Delivery of gas / ignition is not a problem, at least on the top - the broiler comes on.
  • Sensing the temperature is not a problem - the red light comes on.
So, the problem isn't anything I can think of.

Any tips on what the problem is?

    TIA,
    - Tim.
