Machine won't agitate, it will spin and pump. Makes a strange sound I can't describe when it should be spinning. When the machine is empty you can turn the agitator and it doesn't move smoothly. I haven't tried disassembling it yet.
Thank you,

Have someone help you with this: Pull the machine out from the wall enough that you can tilt it back. Get on the floor and remove the belt. Turn the large (white) pulley clockwise. Have your helper look to see if the agitator is moving. If not, you may have a malfunctioning transmission. Depending on the age of the machine, it may be covered by warranty. While you're checking, turn the pump pulley. It should spin freely in both directions without making any grinding or rubbing noises. Look for any evidence of water leaks.

When I turn the pulley one direction the whole drum and agitator spin then lock up when I stop. In the other direction nothing happens, the wheen spins but the agitator doesn't move.

I suspect the transmission might be the problem and have started taking it apart. I have the top off and am trying to remove the outer tub; but it won't come free. Any suggestions? I am assuming when I get it out I'll be able to find a way to seperate the tranmission from whatever supports it.

I am trying to remove the spline nut that goes on the end of the shaft under the inner tub. It doesn't seem to want to come loose and I don't have the proper wrench to loosen it. Is it left hand thread?

I am assuming the transmission is riveted together and isn't repairable. I don't see any parts for it.

I'm having almost the same problem. My top load maytag will not agitate. The motor is running, but no agitation. It works fine in the spin cycle.

Any advice on removing the tubs? I don't want to force anything. It looks like the transmission is the problem which doesn't seem to be reapirable.
