My Hotpoint washer just started not agitating or spinning. There was nothing that lead up to this just went from running perfectly to this in the change of a load of laundry.

When I start the load it fills just fine and when it's reached it level it starts to agitate (maybe 2 or 3 seconds) and then stops. I can still hear a humming kind of sound like it wants to agitate but it can't. I put it on the rinse/spin cycle to drain out and spin out the water. It drains just fine and it's starts to spin (again 2 or 3 seconds) and then stops and I can hear it kind of humming.

My husband replaced some kind of a band on the side that held the washer steady (he saw that was snapped - maybe something that happened when it broke down during spinning at first). So he tested it on spin when the washer was empty and it spun with no problems. We thought it was fixed so I loaded up the machine and it filled like normal then started to agitate (only 2 -3 seconds) and stopped. So I thought great maybe it's 2 pieces that are broken one for agitation and one for spinning. So again I put in on rinse/spin to get the water out and it. It drained and started to spin (only 2-3 seconds) and then stopped. I was shocked. It has just spun without any clothes and very little water but wouldn't spin when there were 7 bath towels and water in it. The rest of the water has been drained out but the towels are still in it. Husband put the washer on spin and it spun. Unbelievably it would spin with 7 very wet bath towels in it but not when there was water in it as well. I'm assuming it will spin with only a certain amount of weight in it. So he tested it again and found that when it has clothes and water in it then the machine will only spin for a few seconds and quit, but it will not agitate more than a few seconds whether empty or full.

Any suggestions?

Were you able to restart the washer right after it stopped or you have to wait?

Remove the front panel and check if the motor gets hot. If it does then the motor is bad and has to be replaced.

- The part number for the motor is AP3965129
