Refrigerator is freezer on top model 1 1/2 yrs old, just out of warranty. Found it with fan running continuously but BOTH compartments are warm, no cool air, freezer fan running and blows air but completely thawed out and not cold at all. Do not hear compressor at all, no clicking trying to turn on. Past experience with refrigerators is "if thermostat is bad it will ice up in back panel of freezer section".. no ice.
So what other possibilities are there to check? Hoping with practically new fridge that it is something other than the compressor.
I should note that we have had several strong thunderstorms recently which could have caused problems with power surge.
Any suggestions on what parts to check would be greatly appreciated.

Pull the refrigerator out of the wall and remove the cover.

Check if the compressor hot, warm or cold on touch. Does it vibrate? Does the fan next to the compressor work? Make sure the condenser is clean.

Here are the breakdown diagrams and Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL ER2CHMXPQ06 REFRIGERATOR | AppliancePartsPros.com

Fan next to compressor is running, condenser is clean, compressor is not running, no vibration.. research on web suggests it could be the starter for the compressor, seems to be common complaint so I have one ordered, will check the cheapest part first.. Have contacted Whirlpool and found that their compressors now come with a 1 yr warranty not the 5 yr they used to cover- very disgusted that a $700 refrigerator didnt last 18 months..no product support from the manufacturer

If the compressor is warm, your start device is blown, if cold, you have other problems. Advice is to put a 1000 joule surge protector in the wall outlet to prevent future failure.

Checked and compressor is very warm to touch..has power; we removed the starter from compressor and doesnt appear to be damaged in any way but the part we received today in no way resembles what was stock attached to the compressor so we will have to return or exchange part as it is not easily determined how that part would be attached to the compressor.
