I have a GE gtr11aaparww fridge. The freezer and foods are frozen and works fine, i will test actual temp later, but the fridge recently wont go below 48-50ish on max cold settings. the compressor turns on and off and i hear fans going. where do I start, I dont see any ice at the back of the freezer. but i did notice in the middle of my fridge at the top plastic has some ice only?

I also notice while dusting that the big metal motor in the back was pretty hot, and if i held my hand on it for like 10 sec it would prob burn me. but it does turn on and off no problem.

If the compressor is very hot, it indicates poor refrigerant circulation, or low refrigerant level and ingestion of non-compressables . Gauges and a amprobe would confirm.

i stuck a lab thermometer in the freezer over night and its all turned on the coldest setting. The freezer is at about 20 degrees.. and fridge is still 48-52.
if its the low or poor refridgerent is this a cheap enough fix, or is my fridge done for.

All indications are you have a refrigerant leak and a bad compressor, time to buy a new one, generally way too expensive to fix.
