dryer element gets red hot, back of dryer gets extremely hot to the touch. does the heating thermostat need to be changed? how can I test to see what the problem is. Are the high limit and cycling thermostat the same? thanks

The first thing I would do is check the exhaust lines (inside and outside the dryer), the blower wheel and the blower housing.

Here are the break down diagrams for the Gibson dryer Model MDE436RBD0

There is nothing else that can cause the dryer cabinet to overheat except for the lack of air flow.

I would check a couple things.

Check the lint filter especially if you use liquid fabric softener. It can coat the filter and drastically reduce air flow. Can be cleaned with soap and water.

Check the seals for the dryer drum, could be the blower is sucking air through a bad seal instead of from the heater coils. This would reduce the air flow over the coils.

Gene, thank you for the help. I looked a little harder and found a partial blockage in the lint filter area, removed it and it cured the problem.
