We've had our share of problems with our Whirlpool top-load over the years. About a year ago I replaced the drive coupling. It was working fine for a few months but now when it shifts into spin cycle it makes a loud clank. I had the top open today while it was in the spin cycle and I noticed that when I tripped the kill switch, the agitator starts spinning at full speed while the basin starts spinning very slowly, but eventually catches up to the speed of the agitator. That can't be good for the clothes. What part should I be looking at replacing this time?

The noise is most likely the the brake and drive tube assembly. The agitator spining the way you explained could just be the agitator dogs. If you grab the agitator, and turn it to the right, and then turn it back to the left, if the bottom part of the agitator does not come back with the top part, replace the agitator dogs. If it does come back, then the brake and drive tube assembly will most likely be the culprit. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

Thanks for the quick reply. Are you speaking of the Basket Drive and Brake assembly part number AP3094539 or is there something else or in addition to this part?
