I have a maytag neptune TL that is from May of 2004 and recently it failed to complete the cycle. In any cycle it stops at a certain time remaining and just starts and stops continuously during the spin cycle. It sounds like the bearings are bad. I did a service cycle and it stops at the same point it does in normal washes. I tried to do a spin cycle test and it only reaches 480 rpm one way and then it tries to go the other way and it won't go. I cannot freely spin the tub with my hand CCW either.

I did all these tests from information I found on here but was stumped so I called the local repair guy and he came out and did the same stuff that I did then said he thinks it is the bearing but that they are not fixable. The company presses them in there at the factory and that the only way to repair it is to get a new tub and stick it in there. New tub costs 475 and a new motor costs 175 and thats with no labor yet.

I have already started looking at other washers but wanted to know if anyone on here thinks I could save my machine and keep what I have.

Please HELP!!!

Hey brandvz,

I try to visit the site from time to time sorry for the late reply I look for the model number before I jump in for help with the FAV6800A/FAV9800A and did not see that the other day. Just happen to drop in the thread to see what the machine model was the fail description caught my eye today.

I’m an owner with some hands on of the FAV6800A and I have helped owners and techs for this model and the LCD console flavor of the machine.

You need to drop out the Clutch pulley first and I think you will find wash water has leaked down past the Tub Seal and or Tranny O-Ring and has seized the One Way roller clutches bearing.

I feel if you can’t rotate the wash basket CCW thru the lid this may be caused by a seized Upper One-Way roller clutch bearing ring that may be used on your series. The wash basket should never rotate CW.

Let’s start by dropping out the Clutch Pulley. It looks like you have come across a few of my post on this forum. Follow this one for Clutch Pulley removal and Upper One-Way bearing ring if used; Maytag Neptune load unbalance Let’s see once removed if you can rotate the wash basket CCW. I feel from what you have posted your machine will use the Upper Bearing ring (please confirm once you drop out the Clutch Pulley) and if so it may be seized a rusted mess I’ll post a pic of a real bad one.

If there are signs of a wash water contamination/leak then you need to read thru this thread for an Outer Tub rebuild; FAV6800A/FAV9800A Outer Tub bearing replacement

In one of my threads an owner got Whirlpool Maytag to send them a complete Outer Tub!!! That blew me out of the water. I guess they could be pushing these out of the warehouse for reclaimed warehouse space. If you look thru some of my threads you will find that post. If you give that a try have your S/N handy. It looks like you have the Service Manual it will show you that the s/n is located on the right rear console side as you face the console from the front.

I have thrown a lot at you and if you decide to try to save your $1K machine I will offer to help you thru the repair process as best i can from a distance.

The first three pics show results of a wash water leak from a leaky Tub Seal/Tranny O-Ring.

Last Pic's show the Clutch Pulley on the right from my Series 16 machine which did not use the Upper Bearing ring due to a different Outer Tub design..............Dick

""New tub costs 475 and a new motor costs 175 and thats with no labor yet.""

Don't buy any parts just yet. After you read thru the threads I pointed you to see if you have the basic DIY skills to do the work. The skills required are very basic. I'm a tech in a different discipline and I feel any one can do this with the right attitude and a lil direction. But read thru the threads and see what you think.

Google this thread [FIXED] Maytag Neptune, Timer Problem go to the last few pages of this thread I feel it is your problem but I could be wrong. It was just extremely difficult for me to walk the owner thru the repair process. Please come back to this site for your support.......Dick

Dick,

Really appreciate you getting back to me and giving me all this information.

I am moving the washer out to my shop this weekend and will begin tearing it apart. I am a big DIYer and look forward to tackling this job with your direction. I will let you know when I proceed further.

Thanks again

I have followed this thread and found it great info. Saw the picture of the ss wrap spring bent backwards and gasped. That is what I am fighting.

Here is my story: FAV9800AWQ Serial #1195418EL TL LCD

Machine ran strong until 2 years ago I laid stone in a lot of my house and washed my dirty clothes (mortar and grout) in the machine. One day the washer would not run. Took it apart cleaned and lubed everything I could see, (not the clutch) machine ran fine. Except a lot of bearing noise.

Two months ago water started leaking from the washer. Ordered and replaced spinner assembly. Lubed everything again (not the clutch) ran fine no leaks. Still had some bearing noise.

This week the machine gave out of balance errors. Water left in machine. Checked out of balance sensor. Pushed down on the right rear and left front. Got error codes, but in level position 'No Out Of Balance'.

Pulled clutch and found lower bearing rusted to spinner sleeve. Upper bearing was functioning. SS wrap spring wound backwards. Straightened spring, WD-40 and solvent and lube one-way roller bearings. They grab pretty tight.

Now, every time I put the clutch in it winds the spring backwards. A few more tries and the spring will break.

Tub spins by hand very freely. I packed grease into the outer tub bearings cavity and smooth spinning, no noise. Spindle and transmission seem to run smoothly. Get them spinning and it takes a few turns to stop rotating.

It's almost as if tightening the clutch binds it. Been over the diagrams a hundred times.

Is there an transmission test?
Since the tub spins freely CCW, the bearings aren't rusted.
Spinning the clutch CW by hand is easy. Wont spin CCW.
Transmission shaft seems to spin freely.

Got any ideas. My wife wants me to wash clothes.

""Ordered and replaced spinner assembly. Lubed everything again (not the clutch) ran fine no leaks. Still had some bearing noise.""

Why did you replace the Spinner Support??? That would take care of about $20 worth of bearings for the Spinner Support.

""Is there an transmission test?"" No but raise the top while in wash agitate cycle and observe the tumblers.

""Since the tub spins freely CCW, the bearings aren't rusted."" You can put off the Outer Tub Bearing/Spinner Support bearing replacement but when you tear down to do the Tub Seal replacement most owners decide to go all the way.

""Spinning the clutch CW by hand is easy. Wont spin CCW. ""
CCW Clutch Pulley rotation is the Spin direction. Sounds like the Upper Bearing ring One-Way bearing is seized.

I feel from the amount of wash water damage to the One-Way Bearings in the Clutch Pulley you will need to replace the Clutch Pulley and Upper Bearing ring. I feel the One-Way bearing in the Clutch pulley white bearing plate is binding/seized caused the SS Large Wrap spring to get wound up in wash/agitate direction. Google this part number 25001169 for best price for the Clutch Pulley assembly.

I'm at work so I have to cut this off. I'll check back in tonight after work 01:00AM on the EC...................Dick

I pulled the clutch out and found the lower one-way bearing which worked perfect by hand, seized onto the spinner sleeve. Had to hammer it out. I will order universal fit clutch for about $50 to $75 like you mentioned in another thread.

I am going to replace the tub seal and bearings while out.

This should do the trick. I'll let you know when the parts come in and I can replace them.

Thanks again.

Good deal.

If you have any issues or concerns just shout out. Dont over tighten the 3/8" Clutch Pulley bolt, per the SM 96 inch pounds 8 foot pounds. I just tighten until it's snug.

Take care and good luck.............Dick
