I have a Whirlpool side by side that periodically stops cooling. I thought it was getting stuck in defrost mode so I replaced the adaptive defrost timer board and bi-metal t-stat with no success. When it is stuck not cooling I can "wake" it up by turning the t-stat off and back on again a few times. In normal mode, I checked continuity of the dial on the t-stat (the controller not the bimetal stat on the evap coil which was replaced) which checked fine, open when off and closed when on. I am about to replace the thermostat and controller but worried I am just throwing parts at this thing. I have not been able to troubleshoot properly because the problem is intermittent and when I catch it if fail mode it wakes up as soon as I start to remove the control panel. If I can access it in fail mode and find the t-stat open but fridge/freezer warm then I should replace it correct?

Also, defrost heater has continuity connected and 23ohms when not connected so I believe defrost function checks out ok. I have either replaced or tested it.

Could be a thermostat starting to go or a bad connection.

Yes if you can catch it failing and the thermostat contacts are open then that is the problem.

Could be the thermostat but I would open it up and check all the connectors/wires first.
Make sure the lugs are clean and the plugs fit tightly onto them.
Check where they crimp the plugs onto the wires, sometimes they are loose or they crimp onto the insulation more than the conductor.
Check for any signs of corrosion often a light brown coating.
Run your fingers along the wires while bending them slightly, if you find a soft spot or a spot which is narrower , it could be there is an internal break in the wire.

If all the above are OK then I would replace the thermostat.

Hopefully you kept the old adaptive defrost board because if you have one readily available the one in the fridge will never fail, I think this is part of Murphy's Law.

Denman, that was great advice. I started checking wires like you mentioned and when I shook the wire to the t-stat the fridge shut down. Then I took the t-stat out and when I jiggled the top terminal it lost continuity. Ordering a new t-stat, this time with confidence thanks to you. I am keeping the defrost board and bi-metal switch, it is an old fridge 2000, good advice too. Thanks a ton for the quick reply.
