Our G.E. refrigerator leaks water from the tray at the bottom overflowing and warms up and melts all the food in the freezer about every 7 to 10 days. I think it is not defrosting properly and when the ice builds up to a certain level it shuts off and melts. What could be causing this?

Here are your parts

Here is some info on how GE manages defrost
http://appliancejunk.com/ge/refrigerator/31-9062.pdf

Sounds like it is defrosting but for some reason it is not operating correctly.
That it overflows your drip tray sort of indicates that either it is not defrosting often enough or the condenser fan is not running so there is a build up of water in the tray over time. From your description I am leaning towards the first possibility.

You may have 2 different problems.

The defrost thermostat should kill power to the defrost heater once all the ice has melted off, iot does not sound like this is working since it is melting the food. It should be closed when frozen and open just above freezing.
If it looks bulged out it needs replacing.

The freezer thermistor may also not be working correctly.

And last but not least is the control board.
Just take a look through this forum and you will see may GE's with blown boards.

You might have some bad solder joints on the motherboard in the back. Just pull the board and look on the backside near the power relay. If ok, I would replace the defrost thermostat clipped on the top of the evaporator.
If the frost pattern in the freezer back is frozen on the right side and not on the left, this indicates a bad evaporator thermister, a plastic white thing clipped to the evaporator. Motherboard part # AP4436216

I know this is an older thread, but I think I've got a similar problem. My freezer does not defrost the food, but the drip tray overflows every couple of months. It seems to get much worse in the summer, once the humidity builds. Any ideas?

I'm new to the website...what boxes?

Never mind, I think I know what you're talking about. I'm assuming you mean start a new thread, so that's what I'll do.
