Maytag washer first began refusing to advance through the agitate cycle when set to Hot/Cold, then after a month or two began refusing to advance through the agitate cycle no matter what the setting was. It still spins and rinses manually, but won't agitate.
Do you think this might be a timer problem?

If it agitates but will not advance then I would try replacing the timer.

It doesn't agitate. It just spins and rinses. The timer doesn't advance unless it's manually moved forward to spin or rinse.

You need to see if the motor is turning while it is supposed to be agitating.
Take off the front panel and observe what happens while washer should be agitating. If the motor is turning clockwise and the pulley is turning the problem is likely with the transmission.
If the motor is not turning, then indeed the timer may be the issue.
