Leaks at one of the three support bolts holding the outer tub to the inverted tripod. Tried to tighten the nut but the entire nut and bolt turn together, so its possible the tub is rusted at the hole. I assume if the tub is rusted, its not worth repairing this 35+ year old model. I did not see any similar threads so how likely is it that the tub has rusted at the bolt?

RRando, Chances are , you'll probably create more damage repairing this unit, at this stage of the game, but it is repairable. Chances are there is probably some rust in the tub hole for the bolt, but it is most likely the bolt is loose and leaking(based on your post). You'll need to remove the tub cover, clamp and seal (at least) that may cause damage to the outer tub, and you'll need a long 1/2 inch open end wrench to hold the head of the bolt(between the 2 tubs)while you tighten the nut on the outside. That's the least you'll need to do to stop the leak, You may want to "go for it", but that's up to you. :) :) :)

Thanks, although everything else on the machine works, I am considering buying a new Speed Queen washer. I don't expect it to last 40 years but at least it looks like the average person can work on it.

Dependant on what part of the country you live in, I know some people who would actually buy the old mechine from you.

northern los angeles (san fernando valley). I'd give it away to someone who
would really fix it. They don't make them like this anymore. I'm thinking the speed queen would be a good replacement.

Rrando, You're right, they don't make them like that anymore, What part of the valley ? that was my service area, way back when, who knows, I may have installed it or serviced it when it was brand new???? My inlaws had this washer in Van Nuys/Northridge and had it serviced a couple of times. But since 1986 I have only had to replace belts and the fill aerator. I used the barrel of a pen to fix that! Went ahead and ordered a Speed Queen Top Loader. May try to fix this one as well, in case the new washer only lasts 10 years. Just what I need another project. ;)

Just what I need another project. ;) Chances are very good, back then we had 2 techs in the whole San Fernando Valley, and we used to rotate, My real concern on the unit, when you remove the tub cover, and clamp ring, the tub will leak, in that area, do to rust and the tub ring lip, coming apart.
