so - thanks to the folks on this forum I found a link to the Owner's Manual on another thread for this same model, and it cleared up my misconception about the "sloshing" sound when the tub is rotated (normal), and also had a quick tip about "freshening the water" which I assume relates to the faint mildewy smell...

so in short, it answered both my questions.
