Hi

I am trying to remove the washer tub nut to get at the transmission/clutch/brake assembly, as it has stopped working. I have come to a very large nut beneath the agitator column. It is aluminum and reverse threaded, it is larger than the axle nut on my car, and the auto shops like NAPA don't carry anything that large. I tried a pair of channel locks but the nut is corroded in place or just too tight where it is to get any leverage.

Does anyone carry a socket this large or know a way of getting this thing off? I am at the verge of buying new washer because of this one over-sized nut.

Any help or advise at this point would be really great

Thanks

You can call this parts site to get the special spanner wrench for this, rather pricey and if there is any damage to the nut, you may never get it off.

Are there any more specialty tools that I will need to service the transmission/clutch ?

No special tools needed. You replace the tranny, the clutch is mounted on the motor. Might want to replace the tub bearings/seals, or at least check them while apart.
At the cost of a new tranny and expensive spanner wrench, the money would be better spent on a new Whirlpool direct drive washer, you can get a Roper for $320.

Missed your reply until now, thanks for the advise. I got the nut off with out the spanner. I used the channel locks and a 3lbs sledge hammer :)

I made another post already how do I tell that the transmission/clutch is bad and not a bearing...or something else?

Don't know much about GE tranny's, if the tub bearings are ok, suspect a bad tranny. Try turning the pulley both directions.

Here is the other post

I am being told in the other post it is the clutch or the belt. I can spin the belt one way but not the other.

If the tranny pulley will not turn in the spin direction, you need a new tranny.

Ok I think I diagnosed the problem wrong. I was thinking the tub spin cycle was the agitation cycle :o

What would cause the agitator not to spin?
