When I start my dryer, no matter which timer position I select, the timer doesn't turn from that point, and the dryer never stops as the result. I think I need a new timer. Please advise if this is correct and if a non-professional with some electrical knowledge can do this.

It does sound like the timer motor. First, see if there may be disconnected wire(s) to the motor. They'll both be black. If both wires are still connected, the timer may have to be replaced. It is a job you can do.

The timer is accessed by removing the back of the control panel. Make sure the machine is unplugged; be very alert around the wiring. The first wire you touch may be the last wire you ever touch. To remove the timer, pry the center of the knob out with a small-bladed screwdriver. Remove the clip around the timer shaft and the knob will slide off. A magnetic tray or mat will help you keep track of the parts. The timer is then removed by removing the two hex drive screws exposed when the knob comes off. Before removing the wires, make sure you clearly understand the color coding marked next to each terminal. A digital (before) picture is very helpful.

Thanks a lot. Your detailed reply really helped. I was so happy when it worked the very forst time after I put everythuing together, but now it works intermittenly only - depending on the position of the timer that I set. Did I get a bad timer again or there could be something else? In most of the cases the timer dial never changes after I set it and pushed start and dryer just keeps going. Please advise.

Make sure you got the right timer; Correct part number according to your model is 285078.

It looked exactly the same and all wires matched. Can it still be different? If so, do you know where on the timer the part # is usually stamped?

On Maytag parts, the number is usually inked onto the body of the part. I have seen bad parts right out of the box. It is rare. If you have a way to check for continuity, check the push-to-start switch and see if it sticks. Unplug it first. I have seen heaters shorted to ground, also, but this usually results in the heat continuing after the motor stops.

I couldn't find 285078 anywhere on the parts - new and old. Both parts have a sticker which identifies them as Maytag Model M460-G.
There are some numbers inked on the motor itself, but they are all different between the 2 parts and in a different format. Same stands for other numbers on that sticker.
A also checked the push-start button. It does show the connectivity while I am pressing that button.
Please advise what else I could check

Check for good connections and continuity in your door switch. If it's good, check to see if you're getting 110-120VAC at the motor.
