My Modern Maid gas oven won't light. Ignitor glows and gets hot but not igniting. Broiler, working fine. Unit is 20 years old but in perfect condition, so I'd like to repair. Faint smell of gas after waiting for oven to ignite. What is problem. Can I repair myself? Thanks

You probably need to replace your bake ignitor, it's not getting hot enough to light the gas. Just because it glows don't always mean it's working properly. Part # AP2934763, if you change this out do not touch the ceramic part with bare hands the oils from your skin can mess it up.

Thanks Nat for the prompt reply. I am confused about how it could be the ignitor as I don't hear any gas flowing and even if I leave the controls set for the oven for a long time, I only get a minimal smell of gas. Does this suggest the problem has to do with no gas flowing? The ignitor is quite bright and seems hot. Would it make sense to switch the ignitor with the broiler to see if it then works in the oven? If you still think it is the oven ignitor, can you tell me how I could install a new one. Is it difficult? Thanks.

You could try switching the ingitors and see if the burner will light. Sometimes the ignitors look hot but they aren't hot enough to open the gas valve and light.

Here's a breakdown on your unit Model PHU101

The ignitors are on the electrical components page.

I've not torn into one of these so I would be guessing hopefully you can tell by these pictures on the link or someone else can give detailed instructions.

Nat,

Sorry to keep bothering you, but those diagrams are not useful. How could I get some instructions as to how to safely remove and switch the ignitors and how to install a new one if needed? I assume the ignitor is the thing that lights up near the gas jets.

I asked Gene to contact you, he know this stuff better than I do.

Remove the oven floor and the flame spreader to access the Bake igniter.

You can learn how the oven igniter works from one of our previous posts: http://forum.appliancepartspros...1897-oven-wont-lite.html

Good luck.
Gene.

Gene,

The ignitor, which I assume is the piece that glows yellow/white is next to the flame spreader. Can you tell me how to remove and exchange it and also what the part number is that I need . Nat gave me a part number but wanted to have me check with you. Is this hard to do myself? Thanks, Joel
