My Hotpoint dryer shuts off after 5 minutes on the high heat (cottons and whites) setting. Runs longer on low heat and medium heat settings (maybe 20 minutes before shutting off). Will run on fluff (no heat) for full cycle with out pre-mature shut off. I have cleaned the vents and ducts. Could it be a thermostat? And how do I know which one to replace? From what I have read there are several.

Try cleaning out your vent pipe.

Thanks for the tip. I actually tried that as my first troubleshoot fix. Unfortunately the dryer is still prematurely shutting off even after my vent cleaning. What would you try next?

If the motor is quitting then you need a new motor most likely.

I would remove the back panel and put a voltmeter on pins 4&5 of the motor and check if voltage goes away at shutdown.
If voltage there and the dryer will not run when you hit the start switch just after failure, you probably have a bad motor. I would confirm by bench testing the motor.

If motor was going bad wouldn't it also shut off during no heat cycle. Seems like my problem is somehow related to heating the load. Shut off occurs during high heat and less likely at medium heat.

Motor will run full cycle during no heat (fluff) cycle.

there is possibly a problem with heater asssembly which is effecting the little safety thermostat on side of housing, causing it to open ,which cuts power to motor until it cools off, if so replace heater +thermostat

I would also look for a burnt wire lowering the voltage to the motor when heat is on.
