Hi there,
We have a dryer that's almost 5 years old, and it now tumbles but does not dry. I am clearly a novice at this; is there a service manual and/or a punchlist I could check against to see how to go about troubleshooting this? My first "don't-know-anything-about-appliances" guess is that it's a heating element, but I don't want to rush to that decision if it is something simpler.

Hello Daddyratty. Check and make sure you have 240 volts coming to the dryer. Also check the heater and thermal fuses and see if they are good. You can test these with a multi-meter [AP3440648]. They should read closed for continuity. Hope this helps. Part number: AP4298584

Thanks so much for the reply. I have the multimeter and printed out the diagrams. Do I understand correctly that I need to get into this housing through the bottom of the dryer?

Well, I am pretty sure I found the culprit. Got the drum out and was going to detach the heater core when I noticed what looked to be a corroded connection to the core. I pulled it out and found that a wire ("the black wire" to be specific) had been fried.
When I was testing the power to the dryer with the multimeter, it seemed like it was over 240V ... could this be the cause of frying a wire to the heater inside the dryer? We're in a rented house, so I'd need to talk to the landlord if so.
(Also, we feel fortunate, because the coating on the wire was melted back quite a ways, so we very well could have had a fire on our hands).
