That might have been the accumilator. Whenever I retro fit a compressor with a R-12 blend I get rid of that thing.

Well I have never been successful cuz once my torch hits the solder joint its all over and there goes the freon. But it sounds like the hi side leak is your main problem with pressures and not pulkling to zero and depending on the size of the leak it wont take long to lose the charge anyway

Ok I think that I got it with a little lower temp solder than the copper sulfate stuff and it was such a small leak that I just put a ball right on top of it, I think it will work no bubbles yet!
would the leak cause a freeze up like it has been doing?

How low should I try and set the temp for?

Your going for 0 or below air temp your evap temp will be colder yet. The moisture was caused from the system being open to long and not replaceing drier as the primary job of the drier is to trap moisture

the drier is about 1 in in diameter (copper) has the capilary tube on one end and the 1/4 on the other end look for the low side and coming off the low side is a real small in diameter tube coming off it the cap tube is smaller than a wire coat hanger or similar in size it's usually bottom left but GE is Bass Ackwards so it could be on the right lol

I see the cap tube in the back and a half inch by 2 in bulb looking thing crimped to the cap tube after the condenser coil ends. would this be what I am looking for? I think that where the cap goes is fairly hard to get to and I havent seen that yet.
