My GEProfile electric cooktop started showing a F143 fault a week ago and since the smallest/simmer burner back/right has shown 'hot surface' (when cool for a day). Tonight, on it's own now the entire cooktop displays F142 if left w/circuit breaker on... so it's now off. What's going on with it, and what's the ballpark to repair this integrated unit?
Also, based on model#JP938S0C1SS and serial#HD724702Q is there anyway i can tell how old it is and whether it's covered under warranty. I have no papers for it... bought the house recently w/a variety of GE Stainless appliances, but don't know when the kitchen was upgraded with them.
Any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated. I'm somewhat surprised i can't find a pointer to the set of fault codes somewhere online. regards.

Thats a pretty sophisticated cooktop ya got there try and locate the tech Data sheet inside unit that should give you the codes and instuct how to put in test mode to determine problem. It may be something as simple as the limiter on the element being bad causing hot surface indicator lite to stay on. To bring up any info on cooktop you have to drop the 0 in the model number GE is always doing that. They give it a model number that wont come up in the system unless you revise it lol I would guess it's an 07 but don't hold me on that

thanks v2k04. a bunch of gems in your repy... that the tech data sheet was inside the unit (news to a newbie like me), and how to bring up the unit by dropping the 0. Your response gave me some confidence to proceed. Found another post confirming how to remove the glass top by removing all the screws on the top edge.
That tech sheet explains the unit can be placed in tech mode by (at the same time) pressing Timer On/Off & LF+ & LR+. And long story short, on pressing Heater on/off which shows reported RTD temp of that faulting top right burner (which is number 4... thus the 4 in error 143 & 142), it shows 882degrees C. Thus... either that temp sensor (RTD) is bad OR the main board is bad. (resistence appears to be fine for that burner at 45ohms which is between the spec'ed 20-80 ohms).

So on checking the database for parts:
Model JP938SC1SS I don't see an RTD (temp sensor probe) for that top right simmer burner (and perhaps they're all the same and i can take one off another burner to verify that's the only issue w/that burner?).
1) Where can i find that part to order?
2) and does testing with one of the RTD's from another burner sound like a good idea to eliminate a larger (main board failure problem before i order)?
3) any idea if there's a way for me to override/disconnect that 4th smallest, faulting, simmer burner all together so that i can use the other 3 burners on the stove w/out the cooktop reporting faults which it seems to constantly want to do even if i do nothing w/it because it thinks it's so hot?

I think I would stay focused on the sensor and burner it's more than likely the burner that always get used more than others. If the Logic board is giving failure codes and going into diagnostics it's probably good. But theres always that chance it is bad But I'm pretty sure you wouldn't like buying that board at over 400.00 ;-(

agreed re: staying focussed on the sensor (RTD), which is why i was asking above #1 where i can find the part to order (to understand the cost and attempt to fix it myself). Or #3 to disable that burner all together and use it as a 3 burner stove w/out the little top right burner. So if anyone can point me in the right direction for that part, i'll give it a try.
