We have a side by side Kenmore fridge/freezer. The freezer is fine. The fridge freezes food even at the lowest setting. We cleaned the vents and anywhere in the back where there may have been dust. Now the water doesn't dispense either, and the filter leaks out water which turns into ice fairly instantly and as a result pops the filter out because of the water/ice accumulation. The fridge is approx 9 years old. Do we need to replace the thermostat or the entire fridge? I know the filter needs replacing.

Atoussa,

First thing you need to check is the auto damper. Located on the left side back wall of the fresh food compartment. if the damper motor has failed or the door has failed and is stuck open, you'll have too much cold air from the freezer, and the f/f compartment will freeze.

Part number: AP5176342
Part number: AP5176342

That is most likely the reason for all the complaints.

Here is the part number for your filter as well, you mentioned you needed one.

Part number: AP2538969

Good Luck,

My Kenmore does the same thing and recently it's getting much worse. It used to just happen with one drawer now anything on most of the lower shelves freezes even though I'm on the lowest settings.

My model is 9957953. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much.

Jules,
The checks are the same on most refrigerators, is the freezer temperature too low ? You want an air temperature of 5 to 7 dgrs. F. Check and make sure there's nothing hanging over the sides of the shelves, or against the back wall, re directing the air flow. Check the top shelf and make sure, there nothing "tall" or bulky, blacking the damper assembly. If all checks OK, then check or replace the damper assembly.
