Just checked the diagrams...Before replacing clutch and brake, you should check the thrust bearing. Matag makes a kit available for less than $50.

The function of the thrust bearing is to disengage the brake in one direction, while allow only agitation in the other. Unplug the machine, Tilt it back; Remove the belt and either use an inspection mirror, or a partner, see if the agitator works as you spin the large White pulley clockwise. Then, see if the inner tub spins as you reverse the direction of the pulley. If it doesn't, the thrust bearing is probably the culprit. Maytag makes a kit available, which contains a new bearing and pulley. Don't forget to replace the belt, too. Not a bad idea to inspect the brake and clutch, while you're down there, but not always necessary to replace it.

I am so sorry for the confusion. I was looking at a couple of completely different machines when I contributed to this thread. Everything I said about Thrust bearing kits applies to the MAV series, instead of the one in your OP. I apologize for not paying closer attention.

I'm a master lockwright by trade, with about a year and a half experience repairing appliances. Just trying to refresh my troubleshooting skills. Slept since I was a "Maytag Repairman". Not trying to give bad advice.
