My 7 year old refrigerator started making clicking noises and losing it's cooling capacity. I cleaned everything, checked the wiring contacts to the compressor relay and plugged it back in; the compressor worked again for less than two hours. After that, it stopped working altogether. I pulled the relay and it was obviously toast (rattling like a maraca with blackened granules falling from it). I replaced the relay with the proper new unit and there is still absolutely nothing happening when the refrigerator is plugged back in aside from the light in the cabinet coming on; it has power. Is it most likely that the bad relay destroyed the compressor or fried the capacitor or ??? :confused:

Check for 120 VAC to the compressor start relay. If the voltage is correct, check the compressor as described in one of our previous threads: http://forum.appliancepartspros...not-cool.html#post281680If the voltage reading is incorrect, then it is possible that the refrigerator is in the defrost mode now. Locate the defrost timer (#12 on the diagram) and turn its shaft CW for about 180° to see if the compressor will start. If it would not help, then locate the temperature control (#3 on the same diagram). Remove the wires from the temperature control and check for continuity between the temperature control terminals while it is in On position. If there is no continuity, replace the temperature control. If you will need the correct part numbers, post the troubleshooting results and the serial number of the refrigerator.
