My husband and I are trying to see if we have a bad belt on our washer. The washer started making a high pitch noise and then it smelled like burning rubber. Unfortunately we can not figure out how to access the inside of the machine to see if it is truly a belt. Can someone please help.

The belts are underneath the washer. You don't need to take the front off. Pull the washer, away from the wall and unplug it. Then lean it back where it rests on the back wall, and then take the belts off. I would turn the pump pully to see if it begining to go bad. It is the pully on the right front, if it does not spin freely, I would replace it and the belt. To take the front off there is a phillips head screw, about three inches off the floor, right in the crevace on the right side of the front, and the left side. Once you take those screws out, grab the front on each side, half way down, and pull the bottom out to a 45 degree angle, and then the top will come out. That angle is the way you put it back. Thank you for the reply. I appreciate it.

I still haven't figured out what is wrong with the machine. We thought it was one of the belts but that doesn't seem to be the case. You can hear the machine pumping out the water but it seems like the basket will not spin. I turn on the machine and it looks like it is going to go and then it stops. I can hear a high pitch noise and then it starts to smell like something is burning. I have removed the agitator and nothing is stuck under it. I also opened the front and top of machine but I'm not sure what to look for. Can you help?

It is very possible, that you have a rusted out tub bearing. In that case, you would need a total rebuild. You also could have a bad brake package. This repair is totally beyond the novice. In either case, you would need to buy special tools. I believe it is time to go shopping. Tom. ApplianceEducator.com

Okay, that's not really what I wanted to hear but I appreciate your help.
Just one more thing, How can you tell if the belts are bad besides them being completely broken? Would I be having the symptoms that I am having with a bad belt? I just want to be 100% sure before we go and purchase a new machine.

VERY carefully with your fingers open the lid and feel around the opening of the tubs, Its very possible that an article of clothing is caught BETWEEN the tubs!!!!

You know it is hard to tell you, other then if the you touch the belt, and you get black all over your hands it is a pretty good indication of a worn belt. You could also take them off, and if they are all glazey on the side's there worn. You know, you really have to take a gamble here, and replace the belts. Or, get another product. Thank you Tom. I will try running my hands on the inside of the belts but I've been messing with them and don't remember getting any black stuff on my fingers. I will check. Do you think we should have someone come and look at it before we decide to purchase.

Tom, my husband I noticed that the tub would start to spin if we helped it out. Does that sound like a belt slipping to you? We are now thinking that it just might be the belts.
