How does one remove the this agitator. I want to clean the underside of the agitator. (We are seeing black spots on clothes after the washing cycle is complete...softener / detergent residue, perhaps?)

The black spots you are seeing is more than likely oil coming up the transmission shaft. Probably time to retire that 30 year old machine and look for something else. It wont do you any good to remove agitator theres nothing to clean and you need a specialty tool to do it.

How would one know if it is indeed tranny oil? Is there somewhere I can look to see if that is the problem?

Thanks!

The agitator is removed by removing a 1/4" headed screw in the side of the agitator(about half way down the agitator) Its also possible that the junk your getting is soap build-up, put a cup of calgone water softener and a cup of CLEAR HOUSEHOLD AMOINA in the machine,Fill it with HOT water and put it through a FULL cycle(no cloths) REPETE 2TIMES:D OIL is YELLOW, UNDISOLVED SOAP is BLACK and GOOKIE!!!!

I have removed that 1/4" screw twice thinking it would free the agitator. It doesn't. (when pulling up on the agitator bottom it flexes from the force.) There must be something else holding it in place?
