I own a 2002 Spacemaker XL1800 microwave oven that recently stopped spinning the glass turntable. This ailment may have been caused by rotating the turntable in a counter-clockwise direction while cleaning (an accident). It now "spins" freely in either direction - there is no resistance.
Are parts readily available for this unit? What part of the drive mechanism is damaged? How can I restore the microwave to original operating condition?

In order to provide most accurate advise we need the complete model number of the microwave. You can find it inside the microwave on the left side.

Remove the glass tray. Pull up the turntable coupler and inspect the bottom part of the coupler. Replace if it's cracked or worn out. Remove the microwave bottom panel and the turntable motor. If the motor shaft is rotating freely then the turntable motor has to be replaced. - The part number for the coupler is AP2016754 - The part number for the turntable motor is AP2024962 Gene.

Good work, thank you. I've followed your instructions and found the coupler was broken where it meshes with the motor shaft. My online order for the new part was placed this morning!

Gene,
I just came up with a similar problem. My model number is JVM1860WD 001. In addition to the turntable being shot, the vent up top will not open. Is there a separate motor that controls it?
Also, am I going to be doing any damage if I continue to operate the microwave until I can get parts ordered? Thanks.

Hi Greg, Check the coupler and the turntable motor as described in the previous reply. There is a separate motor for the top grille. If you can hear the motor running then the problem is with the grille itself. Here are the break down diagrams for the GE microwave Model JVM1860WD001Gene.

It appears to be more serious than just the motor for the turntable. I checked it and all looked fine.
I tried to run it again briefly and it did not heat. There's now a loud hum from the upper right corner which I'm guessing is the vent motor. Would this explain it's lack of heating, too? Thanks again.

If the microwave is not heating and makes a loud noise, then the problem is somewhere in the high voltage part of the microwave. The first failure suspect is a high voltage diode (#50 on the break down diagram). If you are going to do it yourself, be very careful and discharge the high voltage capacitor first. Gene.
