I have two refrigerators with two problems, Id like to get one to work! Both were free to me, so Id like to fix one of them as cheap as possible. BOTH of them are small dorm-style fridges. First one: My dad bought locally from a guy, it's a Sunbeam model# SCR04PMWBW, got it brand new in the box. We think it may be a compressor failure because he had to sit the fridge on it's side for about 45 minutes to get it home, and he did not wait 24 hours before plugging it in. Anyways, he got it home and it worked for a few days then just quit. Now when you plug it in NOTHING happens, no clicking or anything. Id like to fix this one, mainly because it is alot newer and bigger than this next one, 2nd one: Avanti model# 17-7 RC/RW, looks relatively old. Got it from a guy at work who had to put it on a timer because it would freeze, but he never had anything in there longer than 3 hours. Even on a timer, I had a six pack of soda in there and they froze in a matter of days. I took the cold control out, and it looks very worn and rusted. From what I can see it is a danfoss model, if that means anything (seen on an overseas electronics website). This fridge at least turns on, but it's not dependable at all. Any input would be GREATLY appreciated!! These first two pics are of the spec sticker on the back of the Sunbeam model, as well as a picture of the suspected bad compressor spills attached the following image(s):

Compressors usually have a five year warranty. Does the Avanti have a freezer compartment. Also the capillary tube (long wire) of the thermostat, where was it mounted ?

Im not sure if the Avanti has what would be considered a freezer. It's got a "storage" bin where it looks like the refrigerant flows through, but there's not like a door or anything on it to seal it off from the fridge.
On the other hand though, the Sunbeam does have a freezer compartment, if that means anything to ya :)
I just noticed that both compressors seem to have some sort of overload/thermal protection circuits on them. On the Sunbeam, for instance, would having the fridge on it's side for about an hour and starting it up within another hour or so cause this to trip like a circuit breaker? Or is this for when the compressor runs for an extended period of time it cuts it off so it doesn't burn out? Just curious what it's purpose is.

The sunbeam is toast(too bad he didn't wait a day or 2 before pluggin it in), those little refrigerators aren't worth trying to replace the compressor. The Avanti, if you can't find the temperature control, you can use a SC1002(which is a universal control, designed for temporary use, but they work and they are inexpensive) Nat

He's swearing to me that he "waited long enough for the amount of time it was on it's side", but he doesn't remember exactly. Is there any way to check the Sunbeam before I throw it out? I know it's relatively inexpensive even new, but for a college kid like me Id rather try and fix it, or know for a fact that the compressor is toast, before I throw it out.
Someone told me that there was a little black box on the side of both compressors, and they said to take that box off of the Avanti and put it on the Sunbeam. Do you know what he's talking about? I haven't been able to work on either of them in a few days, but Im gonna try to make some time tomorrow to figure out something.
