The freezer will get warm enough to melt ice cream, then after a few hours will start to cool again. It will get cold. At some point the next day it does it all over again. The biggest layman symptom is the ice in the ice maker ends up freezing together into one clump.

The coils on the bottom are clean, the fan in the back works the fan in the freezer works, when I looked at the coils inside they were totally frost free (when warm). It seems like the defrost cycle is way too long if that is possible

Any ideas would be appreciated.

It does sounds as though it is staying in defrost too long. I would start by testing the defrost timer in the control section on the refrigerator side.

I see GE is still using the "Sankyo" timer. When we serviced them we changed them over to "Paragon" timers. the "Sankyo's" had nothing but problems. Example if not mounted correctly, stopped running, also timer motors would bind up frequently. :p

Thanks for the responses, I ordered the timer and the thermostat. I'll let you know if this corrects the problem.

Update: I replaced the defrost timer and the problem was corrected. No problems now for 10 days.
