My direct drive washer agitates, but does not spin, I changed the lid switch, but that didn't work. would the machine agitate if the motor coupling needed to be replaced?

usually not, but check the coupling. Sometimes the washer sounds like it's agitating but it's really not. Does the washer drain?

Can I see the coupling without taking the motor off?

Check the coupling, another possiblity is the clutch is stuck or the brake is locked up.

On the inside of the cabinet and on the floor there seems to be some grease.

Grease is never a good sign.....the only part with grease/oil is the transmission.....

the washer will spin during some cycles. It sounds like it is trying to switch on, I wonder if it is the main controler? When it does spin it will spin through the whole cycle. Other times it will drain and never spin.

Hey. my 12 year old Kenmore Model 110.92491210 is having the same trouble. It is direct drive high capacity top load washer. When it spins it spins all the way, when it doesn't it's clear that no spinning occurred, clothes at bottom, softener still in the shoe, clothes soaked, water drained completely. We had repair man out. First fix - new motor coupling - it had sheared - no fix. Second fix, lid switch - repair man realized this didn't fix, and didn't charge. Third fix, the timer mechanism - didn't fix, but we could not demonstrate to repair man as it is intermittent. So, we have some bucks into it, now, and wish we knew what is real fix.

we3 sounds like one of 2 problems 1 being the timer but if its been changed lets go to 2 which would be the basket drive i change a lot of these ..the brakes dont always release and wont spin with brakes applied.
