We are trying to install a starter switch #2188830 into our frig. According to the instruction sheet we got with the new compressor starter switch from Appliance Parts Pros style one indicates that we skip all other steps of wiring and we can just plug in 2188830 as is and not hook up the other overload and PTC that was included in the packet. Is this correct

Carol,

What type of the compressor is in your refrigerator: EGY80 or EGY90?

Is this compressor the original or it has been changed?

Gene.

The kit AP3885081 is the same as the 2188830. Just pick one of the white start devices and plug it into the compressor terminals. The fridg plug should plug right in and then push in the run capacitor. The two different start devices probably have different klixon trip currents that probably will not make a difference in normal operation.
If I where there, I would select one based on run current.
When done, you should measure the run current, should be less than 2 amps for a typical R134A 1/5 hp compressor. If not, you have problems for a pro to look at.

Thank you for your answer. In answer to your response, we understand we can just plug the 2188830 compressor starter switch into the compressor. Is the fridg plug you talk about the red and white wires that are together in a connector that plug directly into the front of the starter switch? Secondly, on your response to push in the run capacitator...what is this? I am under the opinion that the overload protector is not needed as the starter already has one. What about the PTC relay in the packet? Thank you for any advice. Carol Doorn

Yes, you just plug the red and white wires and plug into the start device. The run capacitor, if your fridg had one, is a black plastic thing with metal male connectors. No need to use the black ptc device, but I would keep all the extra parts.
It is best to check run current with an amp probe to determine if the compressor is working right and to verify you will not have another burnout.
