I have a basic whirlpool dryer,Model #WED5300SQ0 that is about 2 years old. The timer stopped working. When I start a load the timer does not move and the dryer never heats up. I have tried different setting and none of them are working. Any suggestions? Is it just the timer or control board behind it or thermostat or any other possibilities?

A Model number may help others help you.

When you say you tried different cycles did you try timed dry and auto cycles? Just watching to see if the timer advances.

I have tried different setting and sometimes they would move but now they do not.

Here is the parts breakdown.
Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL WED5300SQ0 29``ELECTRIC DRYER | AppliancePartsPros.com

See the attachment for your wiring diagram.

The first thing I would check is the power.

The timer is connected directly across the 240 volts is timed dry through Timer Switch 0 contacts TMtoWB and the heater also requires 240 so odds are that you do not have 240.

Try flipping the breaker off/on slowly a couple times, sometimes you can loose half the line without actually tripping the breaker.
If this does nothing, check the voltage at the plug
L1 to L2 should be 240 volts
L1 to Neutral and L2 to Neutral, both should be 120 volts.
If OK
Unplug the unit and check the wires at the terminal strip in the machine to make sure none are loose or burned out
If OK
Check the power at the terminal strip.
