Washer stops occasonially in wash cycle with water still in tub. I talked to a local appliance guy and he said the problem was most likely a bearing going bad. Motor is over heating and auto shut down kicks in. I unplug power cord and wait 1/2 hour or more and it works again,so far. He says it's a bearing in the transmission. I am pretty handy with tools and am wondering just how much of a job it is to tear it apart? Also I am not totally sure that it is the bearing and the local parts supply won't take return parts. What would you advise? Is there a diagram I can access on the web?

It does sound like the motor is overheating, but the why is an issue. Unfortunately it can be several things and Maytag will no longer allow access to its service manuals.

This is good machine but it is pretty old, and unless you can locate the problem quickly I would consider replacing it.
