washer was making a loud grinding noise when agitating i shut it off,now when i turned it on it fills with water but thats it ,will not spin or agitate but still smell rubber burning

Take off the front and operate it and see what is happening. Sounds like the transmission has seized up and is causing the belt to burn up.
