Refrigerator/freezer not cooling, making intermittant buzzing noise

My husband replaced the light bulb in the freezer with a bulb that had too many watts. As a result, the light burned a hole in the back corner of the freezer and shortly thereafter the appliance began making an intermittant buzzing sound. I plugged up the hole and covered it with electrical tape. The buzzing seemed to stop and both the freezer and refrigerator were keeping the appropriate temperature. Now, weeks later, the buzzing has started, everything in the freezer has melted, and the thermometer we put in the refrigerator is a warm 55 degrees. Any ideas as to how we might remedy the problem short of buying a new appliance?

Try to pinpoint this noise. It might help to understand better what is going on. What is the complete model number of the refrigerator.
Gene.
