Check the holes in the spray arm.
Often they can get clogged with bits of food.
I find it easiest to run a rinse or wash, then open the door to stop it.
Then you can usually pull the food out since it is wet with a pair of tweezers.
Then close the door let it run for about a minute and do this again.
Particles often like to back into the wash arm so you have to do it a number of times.

I would doubt that this is your problem.
A bad piston & nut will only effect the drain.
If the flapper is not sealing you should hear water going out the drain when it is washing or feel it in the drain hose.

A small amount of water is normal, about a quarter inch at the lowest point in the tub. Theses pump will burn up their seals if run when dry.
The water level should be just under the heater element.
Usually if low fill is the problem the pump will make a growling noise because it is sucking in air.
An easy way to check it is to add a quart or two of hot water after each fill during a cycle. Just be careful not to overfill it. If the dishes are now clean then you probably have a low fill problem. The most common cause is a dirty screen filter on the input side of the water valve.

Remove the sump cover from inside the tub. Note how the inside piece goes in, put it back wrong and the chopper will eat it. Check inside the sump for crud, also check that nothing has wrapped around the chopper. Be careful as there is often broken glass in the sump.
