I have a Maytag Performa PAVT234AWW and it will not agitate. When the tub it empty it will go through the spin cycle but is slow when it has clothes in it. The belt does not appear to be worn and will rotate when pulled. Anyone have an idea of what is wrong?

Is the motor operating and the belt turning when it is supposed to go through the agitate cycle? Also, will it agitate without any clothes in the machine?

Watch it and let us know.

Thanks.

The belt does turn during the agitation mode but the tub does not agitate. It will go spin during the spin cycle though.

Assuming your belt is tight and the belt/motor/pulley parts are operating correctly then I am afraid your problem is internal to the transmission. Here is the service manual for your machine and you can read about how the system works. It sounds like you motor is working correctly and trying to make the machine agitate but will not because of clutch and/or transmission issues.

Let's see if any other techs who responds on this forum have any better ideas, but I believe a replacement washer will be the better option than attempting or paying for a very expensive repair.

Sorry I could not have better news. Good luck.

Thanks for the update. It was unlikely changing the belt would solve the problem, and I have to reluctantly go with my earlier recommendation.

Good luck, sorry we could not have been of more help, but sometimes you just have to let a machine go.

I have the same problem with my PAVT234AWW. Why is it that I try to follow the link to servicematters.com and not able to get in?

Regards,
Richard

Rich

The problem is that since the last posting Maytag had decided for reasons totally unknown that they do not want the public or even professional repair folks to have access to their technical data without paying a substantial fee.

So now they not only want you to pay for parts and service, they also want you to pay for getting information about why their product failed and what to do about it.

Actually I think the reasons are not totally unknown. It has to do with more money for them (and less for you).

If you search on line you may find a site that has a manual that you can download.
