I have a Kenmore Elite Coldspot, model # 106.74202400. Just recently the icemaker began working very slowly (1-2 trays of ice per day). I also noticed that frost was building on the back of the freezer. We have been having some food, particularly that which is close to the back of the fridge, freeze a little bit. Usually the food develops a layer of frost on the top. We have even had a gallon of milk in the back of the fridge freeze - not entirely.

I unplugged the unit last night, allowed the freezer to completely defrost and cleaned it out. I removed the icemaker to make sure there wasn't a noticable problem and it all appeared fine. By the way, there is a water dispenser on the front which is functioning just fine. Within 1 hour of plugging the unit back in, frost began to redevelop on the back of the freezer. I let the fridge sit all night and in the morning it appeared to have made 1 tray of ice and has made one more today. The ice appeared to not be as frozen as it has been in the past. Also, the ice we put in there from the store is melting together ever so slightly. I have checked other forums and they all suggest thermostat, but I can't find the thermostat online and have no idea where it is located in the fridge.

This is a whirlpool fridg. Go to www.applianceaid.com There are at least two procedures there to force defrost with the installed adaptive defrost board. When you activate defrost and the compressor stops but you get no defrost, you probably have a bad evaporator defrost thermostat, a round thing clipped to the evaporator near the top.
