As I start shopping for a new refrigerator, some questions are popping up. I'm wondering about the water line to the ice maker. We currently have an ice maker in our non-working GE top freezer frig. If we decide to get a new unit without an ice-maker but with the hook-up for future add-on of ice maker, will we be able to connect our existing copper water line to the rear of the unit so that it will be ready to go for ice maker installation at any time? Or is the water line connection in the rear considered part of the ice maker kit to be added later?

You should be able to use your existing line. Most icemaker install kits come with the appropriate adapters. Just make sure it has a shut off! ;o) Out of curiosity what's wrong with your GE?

Thanks for replying. I posted my problem in the refrig forum but got no replies. Here's a copy:
The compressor stopped running in July; circuit breaker for that area of kitchen was tripped, apparently by the frig itself. I replaced the control board myself on this GTS22WCMBRWW model GE refrigerator a few weeks ago because the old board had the usual "burn-out" issue. The new board is the newer version that GE is using as a replacement. It ran fine for three weeks, then compressor stopped running again; fan continued to blow air. Everything inside got warm. Repair tech replaced compressor relay and overload. All ran OK for five days and now the same thing has happened all over again; compressor does not run, fan continues to run. Repair is getting too expensive to be worth it, but I will take one last shot at trying to solve this problem before I order a new refrigerator ( not a GE !) Can anyone suggest what could be going on?

I will have to try and plug it in again to find out, but I think that it was not running; just the blower that blows the cool air inside was running.

If that fan isn't running but the frig kicks on then you will need to replace the condenser fan.

I'm sorry, I was wrong. That condenser fan actually is running. I can feel air blowing out from under the fridge and also the inside fan is running; but no compressor. (the air blowing underneath is cool, not hot like it usually is)

Did the tech that came out put OEM parts on or subs?

I'm not sure if he used subs or OEM, but if I had to guess I'd say subs, since they were in a generic looking box that he already had with him.

Did he by chance leave the box with you? or write the part number on your invoice?
