Matag Atlantis # MDE7600AYW Electric
I had a blue spark from the back of the dryer. It came from the vent tube where the duct attaches to the drier. Now the tumbler light does not turn on and the dryer does not work at all.
I have confirmed that the outlet has power. I have now cleaned and examined the entire dryer. I have not been able to locate anything that smells burnt or has burn marks inside of the dryer. The only place that I can locate a burn mark is where the vent duct attached to the dryer. The burn mark is on the exhaust tube as it passed through the back panel of the dryer body and on the exhaust duck as well. As I am sure you figured this is where the 2 pieces were connected.

I am stumped as to why it would arc to the vent pipe.
I have never seen a grounded vent system so cannot figure out why the current would jump to it.
Also if a hot wire shorted to the machine's frame it should have shorted back through the ground connection to your electrical box.
Sounds like the unit is not wired correctly and the machine case/frame is floating. This is a very dangerous situation because if the case goes live and you should happen to touch it and a water pope (ground) you now have voltage straight across your heart.

Is this a 3 wire or a 4 wire hookup?

If three wire check that the ground strap from the terminal strip (usually center connection) to the machine frame is properly connected.

When you checked for power did you check both sides of the line (L1 and L2) referenced to Neutral, should be 120 volts?
Also that you have 240 volts when measuring L1 to L2?
