My refrigerator quit cooling, freezer included. I'm not a repairperson, nor particularly mechanically/electrically inclined, but I did discover that my start relay was bad (lots of broken metal parts inside. I ordered a kit from an appliance place, they shipped the 8201769 kit. I have an Embraco EGS 90 compressor. The instructions they provided are not helpful at all to do the actual installation. I am not able to hire a repairman, maybe it would be the easiest way to go, but I can't. That being said, here are the things I'm having trouble with: (BTW, I tested the compressor resistance, it's good)

1. The instructions say that the kit is ONLY for EGY60, EGY70 & EMU60 Compressors. I have an EGS 90. Is this the right kit? If so, then:
2. The instructions say that there are two overload protectors in the kit, FSP 2214067 and FSP 2154760. However, there is no 2154760, but there is a FSP 282402 that says 'pack-sub' on it. Is it a substitute for 2154760? If so, then:
3. Which one of the supplied overload protectors do I use?
4. The 'relay' that I pulled off was a white box, with everything inside. I pried it open and the parts inside look sorta similar to what was shipped in the kit (minus the metal shards). I'm assuming that I discard the old white case and just plug the relay and overload protector directly into the compressor?
5. There is a ground wire attached to the compressor, and two red wires (no blue wires, no green wires, nothing else) that were attached to the original start relay assembly. These wires had been repaired by some helpful person when my dog chewed the wires off previously. I removed the ends (with attached connectors) of both these wires (they were spliced via wire nuts) when I took the old relay off. My bad, but I forgot to mark which one went where. If you can tell me what to trace back to in order to determine which connector goes to which wire, I'd appreciate it.
6. The kit included a 'wire jumper' with a connector on it, but I don't know what to do with it.
7. The narrow slotted connector appears to attach to the OP terminal. The wider slotted connector apparently goes to the start relay itself, but there are three terminals on it, and I don't know which one it goes to.
8. The kit says there should be a terminal cover included. I'm assuming it's that little plastic thing inside each OP package that, um, looks like it covers a terminal? Why would I need a terminal cover for the OP if it only has one terminal and I need to connect to it? ugh.

Sorry for the many (rudimentary) questions, but after searching and searching I was unable to find any explicit detailed instructions on how to do this. It really seems like it shouldn't be too difficult if one knows what goes where (and if you have the right kit). Thank you so much for any help you can offer.

Was thanked: 2 time(s) in 2 post(s)
I would not use this kit, I would use this sites kit AP3083556, cost $29 plus shipping. The start device in this kit is a much more reliable one and made specifically for your compressor.

Thank you for your speedy reply. I have been w/o a refrig for 5 days now, and I'm very anxious to get mine up and running, today if possible. Would the kit that I have now actually work? That's my big question. If it would, then I could use help with all my other questions. If it is absolutely just the wrong components entirely, and absolutely will not work at all, well, then I guess I will be living out of coolers for another four or five days. Sigh. Please do let me know.
