picked up a free freezer on craigslist. we were told the only thing wrong with it was the door gasket was going out. no big deal!!! my wife cleaned it out and plugged it in, using a extention cord. the unit ran for approx. 45 min to 1hr. seemed to be cooling fine but then started popping the outlet breaker. I've tried different cords. turning the temp down to start gradually. moved it and eliminated using a extention cord. tried a different outlet. but nothing works. it keeps popping the breaker. it was free so if i can get away with only having to spend a couple of bucks to fix it... its worth it.. not willing to spend alot on fixing it. I'm not famaliar with freezers and have no idea where to start! help please.

thank you!

Is it the same breaker that's throwing in both places you had it plugged into?

If this is a frost free freezer, than most likely your timer is in defrost mode, and you have a shorted defrost heater. Go to the timer, if it is a frost free model, and turn it out of defrost, and see if it still trips the breaker. post results

i tried 2 different outlets. but apparently they are both on the circut for the garage. i have no idea if the freezer is a frost or non frost model. the only thing on or inside is the thermostat control.. 1 thru 8, round dial on the left side, middle, just inside the door.
ill check different outlets tonight when i get home.
how do i check and tell if its a frost/non frost model??

The tag with the model number should give you some information. And you may also want to check that breaker if the outlets are on the same circuit.
