I'm in desparate need of a new fridge and a "friend" of a friend has one that in 3 yrs old that "just quit cooling" his wife wanted a new one and this one is just sitting there. I'm going to look at it on Sunday he wants $100 for it. A repair man supposedly told him it was "a board or something" and would cost $200 to fix (I assume thats including labor). He says its not freezing up (too bad) but the coils are dirty. What should I look for on Sunday? Thx in advance!

JK, A model number would've helped, BUT, Have him plug it in and turn it on Saturday night. When you get there, Check the freezer section shelves for being cold, fridge section for cool shelves. Remove the rear cover and check the compressor and small tubes for being HOT, The large tubes for being warm (slightly above room temperature), and the compressor for run(no clicking or rattling noises). If you're happy with the results, then you've got a good decent sealed system(most expensive repair) and probably have a defrost or a control problem. Once you get a model number and serial number(just in case) the techs here on the APP Repair Forum, can get you through the tests and repairs to the unit. I got some more info on the fridge. It's a Whirlpool Model#ED5PHEXNQOO. I also found out that both sides of the fridge are warm. The repairman I spoke of earlier also never actually looked at the fridge. He diagnosed it over the phone....hmm? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

So I go and check out the fridge on Sunday and of course he forgot to plug it in Sat night. We plug it in and bith fans are running but the compressor is not. I wait a couple of minutes and I hear it try to kick on. I pulled the relay and it rattled. I hope it's just the relay. I gave him $75.

JK, That's a newer unit, and should have a PTC relay, It shouldn't have rattled. So, you're on the right track. Part number: AP3885081
At one point, the manufacturer, was reccomending to replace the ADC board, if there was no logical, or apparent reason for the relay to fail. You may want to consider that part as well. Part number: AP4340119
