Here are your parts
Replacement parts for General Electric TFX27RMA Refrigerator | AppliancePartsPros.com

Sounds like the defrost thermostat (Item 240 in Section 3) is shot.
It is clipped onto the evaporator coils in the freezer.
The unit defrosts for a set amount of time every 8 hours or so.
The defrost heater is turned off by the defrost thermostat once the ice is melted off the coils to stop excessive heat being added to the unit.
It is probably not opening when it should.
It could also be intermittent so it may check out OK.
Often you can see that it is bulged out and needs replacing.

I am assuming that when the unit does go into defrost the compressor, it's fan and the evaporator fan in the freezer all shut off.

Here is a good site with basic fridge info.

that is what i had assumed...so i did order that exact part last night...was not sure if i should have included the defrost heaters or not, but since it does cool down (defrost) i assumed the heaters were indeed doing the job they were designed to do......soooo i took a leap on the stat as you have stated....it is not bulged out and shows no sign of visable malfunction, it is the factory one unless the whole heater and t-stat have been replaced in the past....we got the house with frig nine years ago and it does appear someone was in there before i was, found a broken cover screw inside, but it could have been from factory that way too i suppose...just want to be sure we dont loose another batch of food...

so tell me does this also affect the refrigerature portion of the unit as well???m and if so how so

This could very well be the begining of your cold control going out. That is the part, that you turn the dial to raise the temperature, in the refrigerator. That is where I would go. Actually, if you really wanted to nip it in the bud, I would replace the defrost timer, and the cold control. They are right next to one another, and the parts are very reasonably priced. It is a great refrigerator. Probably one of the best made. I know it is old, but it should run with some cheap repairs along the way for 30 years. Easy!! Because all the cooling comes from the freezer side so a warm freezer results in a war fresh food side.

I agree with kayakcrzy that it could also be the temperature control thermostat.
If you can catch it acting up and turning the temp control gets it to start then the temp control moves to the top of the list.

Tom,
the cold control for the freezer and refrig are the dials located in the top back part of the frig correct....i dont see where a defrost timer is, but the defrost t-stat is what i have located as suspect...is this what you refer to as the defrost timer? do you have the part numbers for the cold control and freeze control panel.

well i guess i should simply replace the t-stat and the temp control panel with the dials then...right. looking for simple and easy here, timelyness is also important as is getting it right obviously...

Yes, the defrost timer is #257. The thermostat is 424. But 424 is not in the part section, so here is what I want you to do. This is real simple. Unplug the refrigerator, and open the refrigerator door, and take the dials off of the controls, and then lift up on the plastic escution plate, and remove it. Once you have it removed, that hole metal panel is held in place by one 1/4 inch screw, and it is located, just about in the middle on the top side of the whole metal panel. remove the screw, and then directly on the bottom side, of the metal panel it sits in a slot on the refrigerator back wall, push up on the bottom metal panel in the middle, and push it out of the slot. Now, once it comes out, it will come down, and you will see a wiring harness. Un plug it, and pull the whole metal assembly out. Then turn it over, and the defrost timer will be there, and the thermostat will be there. It has a thin long metal wire attached to it. Don't break it. What I need from you is to write all the number that are on the side of the thermostat, so I can cross refrence them. Once you get the numbers of, put it back in. Its real simple. Tom
