My top mount Freezer is cold enough but I can't get the Refigerator never drops below 40 degree max. It usually runs at 40-50 degrees if we open the door just once. The evap is not frozen and it does go through its defrost cycle just fine. Also, I have removed the damper from the freezer and made sure their are no obstructions on the return vents. I bypassed the thermostat and had it run for over 4 hours and it still never gets lower that 40 degrees. The compressor also runs very hot! Any ideas?

Hi,
If your freezer get to temp but and you have checked you defrost system. Does it run constantly? If so your temperature control may be out.
Do you have condesation inside the frig? If so check your door seals.
hope that helps

Thanks for the reply.
I did check the door seal and it is in great shape. the defrost system does not run consistantly and does in fact turn off and on correctly. Their is no condensation anywhere and no ice forming around the evap. I might also mention that I always kep my condenser cleaned and all fans work properly. Am I right in thinking that a refigerator temp should be at 33 - 38 degrees if it has been closed for several hours? Also, does a compresor ever just start to go bad or loose it effeciancy?

YES They can just go bad. If it is from 2-5 years old the compressor may still be under warranty depending on the brand. You might want to check the temp controls too
hope that helps you

Unfortunatly this one is 7 years old! The question that I have is can a compressor keep running (mentioned very hot from previous post) and loose its effeciancy?

Yes they can you may have a freon leak. Depending on where you are and personal persective if it's work doing a compressor swap. The way I look at it is an expensive machine might be worth the repair. Most compressor swaps we do are around $500, which is much cheaper that a replacement of a $1500 refrigerator. It may be worth having a service person in your area to look at it.
