New to the forum..... I have read and researched and have questions.
What is the most common failure component of the defrost system on this unit?
What resistance should the heater elements be?
I believe this system is electronically activated, are there simple tests and can I force it into defrost mode to test my repairs?
I would hate to replace heaters and thermostats only to find a bad power module (I believe this is the controller?) Thanks, David

The most common defrost failure is the defrost heater. Depending on the age of your unit, this heater has been redesigned for a better life of the part. The new design will also directly retrofit, so you should find no installation problem. Just visually check, or do a continuity check, on your existing heater.
Yes, the control boards do fail; especially if you have no surge protection on your refrigerator. In the past GE had a problem with a particular solder joint failing on thes boards. I think they have fixed that. But the most common (and least expensive) defrost failure is the heater.

Thanks for the info. Do you know what the resistance of the heater should be? I'm going to assume I want to ohm it across the pink and blue wires, with the heater elements in series.

I don't have the resistance info. But if you see or measure that it is open, replace it.

This one was a no brainer - it was wide open. I'll order a new assembly, install it, and report back when it's fixed. Thanks for your help!

I'm going to officially call this thing fixed. The heater assembly arrived a week ago last Saturday, I installed it and restarted the fridge. I found small puddles of ice at the freezer drain twice during the week, and finally pulled the cover a week later. No ice buildup on the coils, and the unit has maintained temperature. I'm happy, it saved me over a grand since my wife was ready to run out and buy a new unit!
Now....... gotta go fix the sticky dispenser switch on the Maytag unit in the kitchen.........
